Treatment of Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is a serious disorder in which patients pull hair from the scalp, snout, eyebrows or other parts of the body, leading to alopecia.

Among the patients, hair pulling varies in severity, location in the body, and response to treatment. People with Hair Pulling Disorder often feel embarrassed or ashamed of their behavior, so they try to hide it from others. Because of this, low self-esteem among sufferers is very common. In addition, forced hair removal can lead to bald spots on the scalp or eyebrows, which adds to their embarrassment and depression.

Many people pull the hair with their fingers or tweezers, often watching TV, reading, thinking, talking on the phone or looking in the mirror. According to the DSM-5 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Trichotillomania is characterized as forced hair rooting that generates alopecia. This behavior of the individual can be done automatically / subconsciously. The individual at that time has a reduced sense of subjective control. It can also occur in situations where the individual is experiencing intense anxiety and looking for ways to relieve, but it can also be a targeted / focused act.

Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapy which is effective for treating trichotillomania. It is important to reduce the level of anxiety of the person, but also to find activities and things from which the individual draws satisfaction and pleasure. Depending on age, medication is added.
