Treatment of Trigeminal Neuralgia

The trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most common and painful causes of facial pain. It is characterized by severe pain episodes lasting a few seconds on one side of the face. It is located in the trigeminal nerve distribution region that carries the stimuli from the facial area to the brain.

Several irritants such as chewing, cold or hot water, smile, touching the affected area, shaving, brushing etc may cause or exacerbate pain. The cause of trigeminal neuralgia remains unknown in most cases, but in some cases it may be the result of compression of the trigeminal nerve root by tumors or vascular abnormalities. It is also often seen in patients suffering from multiple sclerosis.

The diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia is based primarily on the clinical examination, the patient's history and the clear description of the symptoms. Treating neuralgia of the trigeminal neuralgia uses medication, usually with the use of antiepileptic drugs, which usually adequately control the symptoms of pain. In cases where drug therapy does not produce the desired results, invasive treatments are followed.
