Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder of chronic and diffuse pain and tenderness that can affect individuals of both sexes and at any age, but usually occurs in women of small or middle age.

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome in which the following symptoms are present:

  • Constant diffuse pain / tenderness
  • Stiffness
  • Fatigue
  • Disturbed and non-invigorating sleep
  • Disorders in cognitive functions
  • Other symptoms such as anxiety and / or depression and functional disorder in everyday life

Diagnosis of fibromyalgia syndrome involves the exclusion of various disorders that could be the cause of the above symptoms, such as:

  • Hypothyroidism
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Rheumatic polymyalgia
  • Other inflammatory or autoimmune disorders
  • Heart disease with chest pain, shortness of breath and palpitations.

In diagnosis an important role is played by the use of psychometric tests to evaluate various symptoms, personality assessment (M.M.P.I) and other related disorders such as anxiety and depression.

The treatment of fibromyalgia involves the combination of both pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions and psycho-education.

The pharmaceutical treatment includes the use of analgesics, anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxants, antidepressants and other drugs.

Non-pharmaceutical intervention usually includes diet, stress control, aerobic exercise, treatment of sleep disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) psychotherapy.

Lifestyle changes and appropriate medications can help the individual regain control and achieve significant improvement.
