Treatment of Eating Disorders

In recent years, dietary disorders have accumulated great scientific interest. It is noted that a large number of people report having a dysfunctional relationship with food intake. Eating disorders are one of the most serious mental disorders due to the high rates of morbidity and mortality, as well as the significant reduction in the functionality of individuals. Nutritional disorders include anorexia, bulimia and hyperphagia.

People with eating disorders have a common characteristic: they all reduce and weaken their social and functional roles. They may experience depression, anxiety, social isolation, and complications in their health. They may even be driven to death by either complications or suicide attempts. The impact of eating disorders affects not only the individual but also his / her family. The person may show anxiety and mood disorders, while the disorder may have a negative impact on family income, as the patient may need to have someone to care for him continuously.

Eating disorders usually occur at the age of 10 or at adolescence, but this does not mean that it cannot occur in childhood or at a later stage of age. The likelihood of appearance of the disorder does not differ between the genders. However, women are more prone to it. Research suggests that its appearance is due to biological, social and psychological factors.

Psychological support is aiming at identifying the disorder and transforming the dysfunctional way of thinking of the individual as to his/her body and his/her relation to eating, so that he/she can live in a more functional way.
